Amur Maacki

Description:

Small, dapper and aristocratic without being overwhelming, the amur maacki is a welcome addition to any landscape. Typically grows in cultivation at a slow-to-moderate rate to a height of 20-30′. Features erect, narrow, spike-like clusters (4-6″ long) of fragrant, dull white, pea-like flowers which appear in late spring. Flowers are followed by flat seed pods (2-3″ long). Compound, odd-pinnate, leaves emerges first as a velvety soft blue-green, gradually maturing to a dark olive green. The fall color is insignificant. The mature bark is coppery-bronze, scaly and quite handsome.

Karlovich Maack, a 19th century Siberian explorer, discovered the tree growing in the region of the Amur River which serves as the border between Siberia and China. This is a tree for those almost impossible sites; heavy clay and droughty soil, air pollution… it takes it all in stride. It’s handsome enough to be used as a specimen and its clean habits render it suitable for a patio tree
